ALLERGY Card
Importance of RED Allergy BAND and ALLERGY Card
Allergies and Food Safety
Supporting awareness, clarity, and safer food choices
Food allergies can be serious and, in some cases, life-threatening. Clear communication, awareness, and precaution are essential — particularly in shared environments such as schools, families, workplaces, travel, and food service settings.
nutritionBAND supports individuals and organisations by providing simple, visible tools that help communicate dietary needs clearly and reduce risk around food choices.
The RED Allergy Band
The RED nutritionBAND is designed to highlight the presence of a food allergy and signal that a high level of care and precaution is required.
The RED band:
- Increases awareness in shared food environments
- Encourages clear communication about allergens
- Supports safer interactions at mealtimes, travel, and events
- It is intended as an awareness and communication aid, not a medical device.
Understanding food allergies (simple overview)
Food allergies occur when the immune system reacts to specific foods. Reactions vary between individuals and may be immediate or delayed.
Some reactions may be severe and require urgent medical attention. Because diagnosis and management can be complex, individuals with allergies should always follow guidance from qualified healthcare professionals.
There is currently no cure for food allergies. Management focuses on:
- clear identification of allergens
- avoidance strategies
- effective communication
Why clear communication matters
Living with food allergies can be socially and emotionally challenging — especially for children and young people who may feel pressure to “fit in” or avoid drawing attention to their needs.
Clear, respectful communication tools help:
- reduce misunderstandings
- support inclusion
- improve confidence
- reduce unnecessary risk
This is particularly important in schools, restaurants, travel settings, and group environments.
Statistics on allergic reactions
Rates of food allergy and intolerance vary across the world. In the UK, an estimated 2 million people are living with a diagnosed food allergy, and 600,000 (1 in 100) with coeliac disease. These figures exclude those with food intolerances such as lactose intolerance.
There is no cure for food allergy or intolerance so the only way to manage the condition is to observe a strict avoidance diet. This puts a strain on the food allergic person, their family and friends. To avoid being the ‘awkward one’ who limits food choices or where to eat, the food allergic person often feels compelled to risk allergic reactions to fit in; this is especially true for young people.
